Built to carry coal from Dominion Coal Co., Sydney NS to Ontario Hydro, Toronto ON

680’ LOA, 645’ LBP, 75’ beam, 43’9” depth
1 deck, arch cargo hold construction, hatches @ 24’, oil-fired boilers, steam turbine engine, 9000 SHP

657.0 x 75.3 x 39.8, 18809 GT, 11547 NT     Can 318773     to:
Upper Lakes Shipping Ltd., Toronto ON (home port Toronto ON)

Entered service May 1964

Sold 1969 for off-Lakes service and left the Great Lakes

Renamed Conveyor (Liberia) 1969

Sold 1972 to Upper Lakes Shipping Ltd., Toronto ON, reenrolled Canadian and returned to the Great Lakes.  Renamed Cape Breton Miner.

Operated in both on-Lakes and off-Lakes service (most of it off-Lakes).

Sold 1983 for off-Lakes service and left the Great Lakes

Renamed Mazahua (Vanuatu) 1983

Sold for scrap 1987.  Arrived Kaohsiung Taiwan May 27, 1987 for scrapping.

  1. I sailed on the Cape Breton Miner as an oiler in 1972 also as 3rd engineer in 1977 .
    Do you know who was chief and captain at that time .

    • Season opening appointments for her were not published in 1972. Probably still off the Lakes. K Crooke is shown as capt and J. Montambault as chief for 1973. Maybe also for 1972 after she came back to Upper Lakes.

      For 1977 N. A. Salitter is capt and A. Mair chief.

    I remember very well both captains , 2 special personalities. Also the chiefs , Jean Montambeault was there as a relieving chief , his ship was the Montréalais for a long while.
    As much the Cape Breton Miner was difficult for the engine crew I had a good feeling of that ship.

I was seaman on her 1980 or 81 will Check my discharge book I paid off in New Orleans and I think she was scrapped in Mexico not long after we had a American first mate mainly Newfy crew with several from nova scotia including the Boatswain Norm Breaon . My father wS 1 St mate on ontario power

    • N. B “Mike”. Salitter was Captain of both her and Ontario Power. He passed away yesterday March 30th, 2022 at 83. I came across this looking for eulogy material, thought I’d pipe in.
