Built at Ecorse MI by Great Lakes Engineering Works, Hull 184
Launched March 21, 1918
Laid down as the general cargo freighter War Sphinx for the British government for off-Lakes service during World War I.  Requisitioned by the United States Shipping Board during construction, renamed Lake Crystal and left the Great Lakes upon completion

1 deck, coal-fired boilers, triple expansion engine, 1200 IHP

252.5 x 43.8 x 20.4, 2308 GT, 1378 NT     US 216168

Sold 1925 from the postwar reserve fleet to Ford Motor Co., Detroit MI and returned to the Great Lakes
Converted to barge
Remeasured to 2015 GT, 1883 NT

Entered Great Lakes service 1927

Requisitioned 1942 for off-Lakes service during World War II and left the Great Lakes

Foundered Feb 14, 1946 off Watch Hill RI, Atlantic Ocean.  Enroute with coal from New York NY to Boston MA
