Entered service Aug 27, 1979 clearing Collingwood ON light for Calcite MI.

Management transferred 1993 to Seaway Self-Unloaders, St. Catharines ON, a vessel operation and management joint venture of Algoma Central Railway and ULS Corporation to operate their self-unloading vessels, ULS Corporation, Mgr.

Self-unloader and straight deck management organizations of these firms merged 2000 into a single firm, Seaway Marine Transport, St. Catharines ON

Fleet arranged late 2007 for MVs Algobay and Algoport to receive new forebodies at Jaingyin China by Chengxi Shipyard.  Algobay towed to China 2008.  Algoport followed in spring 2009.

Foundered Sept 6, 2009 in Pacific Ocean in Tropical Storm Dujuan while under tow by tug Atlantic Hickory.  No lives lost.  (Algoma announced that another vessel would be acquired for use of its stern to be attached to the forebody nearing completion at the shipyard.)

  1. I think it’s great that Algoma took a financial loss on the Algoport. Canadian shipping companies have decided that building ships in Canadian shipyards is too expensive and have decided to use Chinese shipyards instead. So, let’s see how greedy these Canadian shippers really are…
    It is generally understood that Canadian shipping companies get federal subsidies, use China as a ship builder, use the American Soo Locks free of charge and have a dismal number of great lakes ice breakers.
    I believe the American taxpayers should demand the end of their free use of the locks and USCG ice breaking services. Until the U.S. wakes up they will likely pay the total bill for the eventual construction of a new 1000ft lock.

  2. Anybody notice her keel was laid 4 months after her launch according to this site. Since she allegedly entered service August 1979 perhaps there id a typo here?
