Management of fleet transferred 1957 to Inland Steel Co., Chicago IL

Laid up Oct 31, 1981 at Milwaukee WI and did not operate again

Sold 1986 to Escanaba Basic Marine, Escanaba MI and towed to Escanaba

Towed 1987 to South Chicago IL for use as a cement storage barge.  Returned 1988 to Escanaba.

Sold for scrap 2006 to International Marine Salvage, Port Colborne ON.  Towed to Port Colborne for scrapping.

  1. My father was a Wheelsman on the L.E. Block in 1935.
    I have pictures of him at the Wheel and on the deck.
    Was the entire ship scrapped?
    Do you have a list of the 1935 crew members?

  2. I worked at a building in the Milwaukee m ooing basin when the Block was laid up, Inland hired a shipkeeper, who was extremely dedicated, she never looked neglected.
