Entered service 1887

Sunk June 19, 1889 in collision with steamer North Star 60 miles west of Whitefish Point, Lake Superior in heavy fog.  No lives lost.  The North Star held itself against the Sheffield until its crew could come aboard her.  Enrollment surrendered Dec 19, 1889
